Shapes...Letters...Both?

Jason Marz's recent album cover "Love Is a Four Letter Word," instantly took my mind to Bing's Picture This. I saw the album artwork before knowing who the artist was or what the album name was. However, I automatically read the word "love." I also saw for individual, simple shapes in a row, each of a different color: a yellow rectangle, a red circle, a green triangle, and a blue square. The rectangle seems to be slightly larger then the other three shapes, but beside that, they are all the same proportion. The shapes are aligned horizontally and have equal distance between them. They are placed in the center of the page. The arrangement seems content and the colors complement each other. No one shape overpowers another, and no color stands out nor blends in too much. It is apparent what word is being spelled without using actual letters. This artwork reinforces Bing's principles and message that simple shapes, placement and sizing are extremely powerful tools.

  1. Cool! It's interesting how a square on its own would never make us think of the letter e but in this situation the context is so strong that we recognize it as "e" without skipping a beat.
