What Do A Motorcycle Gang and Alter Boys Have In Common?

Mark Laita has designed a brilliant photography book entitled Created Equal. Laita spent 8 years traveling around America, capturing a variety of people who struck his interest. This magnificent book takes a look at the different groups and types of people he met on his journey. Laita photographed his subjects in black and white with a simple, dark backdrop, in their defining attire for all to see. He captures every joy and disappointment, inadequacy and perfection. Alterations would only take away from the underlying message. Laita then juxtaposes two photographs next to each other and labels the photographs by the persons description and the year taken.

Laita's book urges us to take a deeper look at people. We are forced to think beyond our initial assumptions and truly contemplate the world and what makes people who they are today: their upbringing, their surroundings, their wants, their needs, their struggles, their achievements, their circumstances, etc.

"I simply think people are tremendously interesting. That two little girls can grow up in this country and one grows up to become a Catholic nun and the other a prostitute is endlessly fascinating to me. These photographs make me think about how and why they took these different directions, not whether one is 'good' or 'bad.'" ~Mark Laita

I am in love with the idea of this project. It takes such a simple concept and brings it to a deep level of thinking and meaning. With almost no effort it makes you think about your life, about the people in the photos lives, about what your life could have been, about what their lives could have been. And, if this book wasn't selling for almost $400 on Amazon, I would a proud owner of this diverse collection. I hope you enjoy the concept as much as I do, and urge you to look at more of his collection on the internet...or in his book if you have $400 to spend.
