It's A Profession!
Synchronized swimming is not only a hobby or sport, it is a career for some. Both "O" and Le Reve are marvelous shows in Las Vegas, featuring a variety of acrobatic performances including synchronized swimming. In order to become one of these performers, you must audition. One way to do this, is signing up on a list at Collegiate Nationals. Just because your collegiate synchronized swimming has ended doesn't mean that all of synchro has to have come to a close for you.I have been lucky enough to see both of these shows. Again, they are both magnificent, but "O" is my favorite. I would definitely recommend seeing any Cirque Du Soleil show if you get a chance (although Le Reve is not Cirque).
Below I have the poster for each show, a photograph highlighting the swimming, and a video description of each of the shows. It is quite facsinating how much goes into these shows and how they maneuver everything. Both shows, consist of land and water features. This requires A stage to be raised and lowered into water. The swimmers must know where to be and when. Performers are under water for such extended periods of time that scuba divers stay below to provide oxygen. (Sadly this is not allowed in synchronized swimming, I guess since we are only under for maybe 30 seconds as opposed to 13 minutes). There are also sound cues under the water, just as there are speakers during synchronized swimming. Please watch the videos, enjoy, and be prepared to be amazed.
These performers astound me--I've never seen Cirque du Soleil, but my family has and they were amazed. Have you heard of anyone getting injured during performing since they have to stay under water longer than typically allowed?
